SCENARIO : Configure & Test Fast Roaming (802.11k/v/r)
CATEGORY : Roaming Optimization
PURPOSE / USE CASE : Seamless handoff for mobile clients
STEPS TO TEST : Walk across APs with streaming/video
Fast roaming using 802.11k, 802.11v, and 802.11r is a set of IEEE Wi-Fi standards that enhance how client devices move between access points (APs) on the same wireless network. These are especially important in environments like homes with mesh networks, offices, or campuses with multiple APs.
When your phone or laptop moves out of range of one AP:
802.11k lets the client know what APs are nearby.
802.11v lets the current AP tell the client which AP to switch to.
802.11r lets the client roam instantly with pre-authentication — no full WPA2 handshake.
The result is faster, seamless roaming with minimal or no connection drops — ideal for VoIP, video calls, and real-time apps.
HOW IT WORKS:
Enable “Enable Fast Roaming (802.11r)” under advanced section.
Mode | Where the handshake happens |
FT over-the-air | Wireless link to new AP |
FT over-the-DS | Wired link between APs |
